This unfortunate tale serves to reinforce the importance of frequently exporting 1Password data for the purpose of backup.

Personally, I perform a 1Password export weekly, for both 1PUX and CSV formats; and store the exported files on an encrypted virtual disk on a Mac.  As a consequence, in the event of a serious issue, I know that I will be able to promptly restore all items to 1Password or to an alternative password manager.
