Suggestions for helping older folks get used to 1Password

Hi all! Congrats to the 1Password team for kicking off this new platform!

I've been struggling to get my parents used to the workflow around using 1Password, and all of the important qualifiers: using passwords only once, saving a password each time they create one, using 1Passwords password generator.

Wondering if y'all have any tips and tricks for making 1Password particularly useful for tech-averse or elderly users. Their main devices are ipads.

Thanks in advance!

  • Set Mom up on 1Password a couple years ago, but it's just too hard. It was a mistake. Even I get a little frustrated with the 1Password workflow from time to time, but my 84 year old Mom, it's just too much. For starters, there's 2 1Passwords - one that runs in the Windows system tray, and the other one that runs in her "foxfire" browser as she calls it. She doesn't know which one to use when. The browser plugin is too hard. Sometimes it pops up things over the top of the login screen, and sometimes it covers up the actual Login button that you need to click on the web site. My Mom can't understand any of this. She can't understand that you need to close or move the 1Password pop up to get to the Login button that's underneath it. She just can't use the system at all very effectively. I try to train her how to use it, then the next day she's completely forgotten how to use it. Each web site interacts with 1Password a little bit differently. Now I'm trying to get her to install TeamViewer on her iPhone, but that makes her type in her iCloud password, which she doesn't know, so I have to tell her to go get her laptop so she can get her iCloud password so she can install TeamViewer so I can help her with 1Password. It's just too much. It was a mistake.

New plan is to go with a paper & pen notebook system. Pick a common core of a password and then add different suffixes to it for each different web site.

Obviously i'm not from 1Password, but did want to chime in and agree that some tips or something to help the less technical users to use 1Password would be incredible.

I feel like some kind of guide, or webpage may help them out a lot.

Some of the places I notice that people get confused with 1Password about are:

    1. What's the point?, what's the benefit?
    2. Identification is a massive issue I see a lot.  How people should "know" when something pops up asking to "Save a Password", how do they know what is asking them. Is it Google Chrome Passwords, Apple Passwords app, 1Password, something else.  It would be nice if there was a super super easy way to help people with this.  Maybe an option we could enable for certain devices/users where all 1Password windows had a bright red (or other colour) glow or border.  This would allow us to say, Ok, If the box asking to save the password has a bright red glow or border then that's the one you wish to use. Ignore all others.
