Feedback: Universal sign-in, a new Autofill Experience

Noticed this morning this Sign in prompt when I go on a site that is stored in my 1P. Can’t find any info about it. Anyone got any ideas when it was released and do we have any control over it?

Hello folks!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone has shared about 1Password’s new universal sign-in experience. 1Password now brings password, passkey, and other sign-in options into a single and convenient prompt for all of your logins.

As we continue refining the new experience, based on feedback and reports from customers, the new experience has been temporarily turned off for 1Password Business users. If you use 1Password through your employer, you’ll see the classic experience for now. We plan to re-enable the new experience for business customers soon and will share updates as they become available.

If you use a personal 1Password account, and you’d like to use the classic experience too, you can follow these steps:

  1. Right click the 1Password icon in your browser’s toolbar and select Settings.
  2. Choose Autofill & save from the side menu.
  3. Toggle off Use universal sign-in for logins.

I’m having a similar issue in Safari.. It’s <VERY> clunky..  I used the MacOS dev beta for the past couple of months..  And after each new beta update, it seemed to cause these types of issues with 1Password Safari integration.. Sometime in the past month of betas, the new universal login (I think that’s what it’s called.. that floating login button at the top center of the page) showed up.. It was excellent!  It was super fast, and seemed to intelligently select the right log in I wanted to use.

Now, since the production release of MacOS 27 on Monday, it’s back to being clunky/funky/broken.

No universal login, and the dropdown in the username/password fields is… odd?  It looks weird, I have to authenticate for each field (even if I’ve already authenticated/unlocked my browser extension).  It’s just such an interruption / slowdown to my workflow.

Universal login is gone from Chrome and Brave, as well.  But, the field/dropdown/login workflow on those is the same as it’s always been..

I’ve completely removed/uninstalled the Safari extension and re-installed it.. no changes..

What’s going on?  Bring back the universal login!

I’m sorry that you’re not seeing the new sign-in experience in your browser. Are you using a business account provided by your employer? We’ve temporarily turned off the new sign-in experience for business customers while we work through a few issues and we hope to turn it back on soon.

If you’re using a personal 1Password account then make sure that the new experience is enabled:

  1. Right click the 1Password icon in your browser’s toolbar and select Settings.
  2. Choose Autofill & save from the side menu.
  3. Toggle off Use universal sign-in for logins.

Let me know if that doesn’t work.

Hi there,

I do have a 1Password Teams account.. I’m the employer, and there are 3 of us.

If you’ve disabled it for Business/Teams that explains it, because I don’t see the “Use Universal sign-in for logins.” option, at all in the settings.

The Universal login is great, though.. Took a week to get used to it, but it was incredibly fast and responsive and efficient.. Going back to this old-school Safari auto flll definitely feels like a step backwards after using the Uniersal for a few weeks. ha.

This feature has been fine for personal use in my experience, but awful for business where we have a SaaS product with dozens to hundreds of logins we’re sharing on the same domain.

It needs to allow you to search and filter down by title like the old login method would filter (specifically if we saved an item as “{productName} - {tenantName}” as the login item name, we could type {tenantName} into the username box and it would filter the popup to only those values).

A more concrete example would be a website running on mysaasplatform.com. If we had a tenant named TestUSEast, we may have a url like login.mysaasplatform.com/testuseast. 1Password shows all the options for mysaasplatform.com and we would typically start typing testuseast into the username box and it would filter the options in the dropdown to our “MySaaSPlatform - TestUSEast” login item.

This is a must have feature (or something equivalent that’s easy to use) to use this new sign in experience in our business accounts.

Thank you for the feedback! I’ve passed your request for a way to filter/search through login suggestions to our team internally.

Just have to say hats off to the 1P team. The new chrome extension sign-in banner that floats at the top of the page rather than dropping down from the form field is absolutely awesome. I have many sites with multiple logins defined (web site testing for example), and the drop down selector is so much better than the old behavior. I also love the selector appearing at the top of the page. Would love to see the same behavior in Firefox. Probably not possible in chrome on android, but boy it would be a lifesaver there as it is so hard to pick out the right login for a site with multiple saved.

Thank you for the feedback! We’re thrilled that you’re loving the feature in Chrome and we’re working to release it for Firefox as soon as possible. We’ll also continue to look into what we can do to bring a similar feature to Android in the future.

This was already an issue prior to the new “universal login” update to 1Password, but i’m wondering if there’s a way, maybe some sorta dial, that allows you to tell 1Password to stop suggesting a login to a web site that i’m already logged into? Or suggesting to sign into / autofill fields that have nothing to do with anything password related?

I’m sorry that you’re seeing the prompt appear unexpectedly when you’re already signed in. So that we can get this fixed, can you share a little more information about this site with our support team:

  1. Open the website in question and sign in.
  2. Wait until you see the sign-in prompt appear when you’re already signed in.
  3. Right-click on the page and click "1Password - Password Manager" > Help > Collect Page Structure.

Attach the resulting JSON file to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

I am trying to stop this universal sign-in toast from coming up every time I go to a web site in chrome. I’ve gone to settings and disabled Universal Sign-In but i still get the drop down. Latest version of everything. Tried quitting and starting chrome.  Please help! This is the most annoying thing. I can’t stand that it isn’t easy to opt-out of new features that disruptively disturb known workflows. Instead of doing my work, I’ve spent the last 45 minutes dealing with this. Argh!!!!

Make sure that you’ve followed these steps:

  1. Right click the 1Password icon in your browser’s toolbar and select Settings.
  2. Choose Autofill & save from the side menu.
  3. Toggle off Use universal sign-in for logins.

You’ll need to do this in each browser, and browser profile, where you use 1Password. If you still see the new sign-in experience after following these steps then can you share a screenshot of the prompt that you see?

As I said, I did that - it didn’t stop the behavior.

September 21, 2026

Everyone who’s updated at my company is having the same painful experiences.

1Password never presents the passkey list at our 2FA screen. It times out after a few minutes and falls back to the Windows passkey-select prompt.

Once you log in and are taken to your dashboard 1Password shows “Finish signing in on this page” even though there are no credential fields on the page.

This update feels like a beta test and does not match the quality of experience I expect from 1Password.

September 21, 2026

I debugged the process pretty extensively. What I found was that in 10 out of 10 tries 1Password failed to show the use-passkey prompt when we call `navigator.credentials.get()` immediately on page load. We added a change to wait for page load or 500ms, whichever is longer, before calling `navigator.credentials.get()`. This resulted in the prompt appearing in 10 out of 10 tries.

This is an ugly solution. The better solution requires implementation by 1Password: If 1Password accepts the ceremony, it should queue the request until the UI layer is ready and the picker can be hosted; else, decline immediately so the browser handles the request without a 30-second stall.

Both options are better than the current behavior of silently failing.

@1P_Dave Based on what I've experienced (and reported in my comment above) and on comments from others here, it seems that version 8.12.37.1 of the extension broke the ability to disable universal sign in for passkeys. That is, I have “Use universal sign in for logins” switched off, but I’m seeing the new centered pill UI on sites for which I have a passkey saved. This wasn’t happening prior to September 11, when 8.12.37.1 was released.

Can you confirm that this is the case? I believe you can reproduce it on webauthn.io if you switch off universal sign on.

I reported this last week in a support case, but I haven’t heard anything back there. Given that this has been broken for 10 days now, I’m pretty shocked at the lack of response. Breaking passkeys for an enterprise customer with hundreds of thousands of employees would seem like kind of a big deal.

@DaveTO

I’m sorry for the confusion, this is expected behaviour. We now use the centre prompt for passkeys and “Sign in with” notifications to simplify the experience, rather than showing two separate prompts near the top of the page. The classic passkey prompt was already quite similar to the new centre prompt, so we decided to consolidate these interactions into a single, consistent experience while still giving folks the option to turn the new experience off for password autofill.

Turning off the new sign-in experience will restore the classic inline menu below the username and password fields for autofill.

I’m very sorry for the delay. I see that my colleague replied to you on Thursday, and I understand how frustrating it is to be waiting for a response. You’ll receive another reply to your latest email soon.

@1P_Dave Thanks for the reply.

I’m a bit confused: Are you saying that it’s expected to see the new passkey prompt even when “Use universal sign in for logins” is disabled? In other words, that the setting is only intended to apply to password-based forms?

If that’s the case, did the setting also apply to passkeys prior to the most recent extension update (8.12.37.1), or was it always like that?

Thanks again. I’m still trying to piece together exactly what changed when.

Adding to the placement feedback from @aliceL, @frysee and @gveres, and to @cryptochrome's point about passkeys. This one's urgent for us: everyone at our company hates the new prompt and keeps asking us to get it changed.

Since 8.12.36 the toggle is "Use universal sign-in for logins" and it only covers password logins. Passkeys and "Sign in with Google" always open the new prompt at the top centre of the page, even with the toggle off. Blake confirmed on Reddit that the passkey popover is separate and can't be turned off right now.

Two requests:

1. A placement setting for the prompt. Top right, where the classic prompt used to sit, would be enough for me.

2. A way back to the classic prompts for passkeys and "Sign in with" providers, either through the existing toggle or separate toggles.

1Password in the browser 8.12.37.1, Chrome 153, macOS 26.5.2.

Thank you for the feedback! Could you tell me a little more about why you’d like to see the previous prompt return for passkeys and sign-in with providers? I’d like to include your specific use case in the feature request I file internally.

As a user that often has more than one login for a website, the new Universal login experience is much slower to use and just all around annoying. The Universal login design downgrades the user experience in my opinion and requires more clicks to get to the account I want. When I visit a website with login fields, I prefer to not see any popup until I click inside of the login fields. I don’t want to see any annoying popups until I am actually ready to login. The old experience is much better because when you click on the login fields, the 1Password popup comes up right near the login fields (much better placement) and lists all of my logins that I have for the website in alphabetical order, all in the same list without further action. The order is predictable and I know where the login I need is located each time I click on a login field and the 1Password menu pops up with the list of accounts. I just click the field, click the login from the list and boom, I am logged in. Very easy to use. The passkey popup to the right though (for websites with passkeys) I actually didn’t mind it always showing up at the top because on the right side it is out of the way and easy to use. The new universal experience is too basic for people with multiple logins and it’s a huge downgrade in my workflow having to expand the menu each time to see more accounts and they seem to be in a random order that is based on usage but not predictable.

In the settings I have turned off the new Universal login and I have gone back to the old experience.

Passkeys Feedback:

However with the old login experience I am still having issues using passkeys because passkeys still use the Universal popup at the top center of the website. Is there a way to disable the new Passkey popup at the top center of the browser with the old experience (I have universal turned off)? I preferred the way passkeys used to be shown off to the right side at the top. I often have some websites with several accounts (several passkeys) and this slows down the process of choosing which passkey to use. The long list off to the right side was much better. It’s now exhausting to use passkeys because on Mac I have to click and expand the menu to see a list and find the passkey I want to use and in addition to that I now have to use TouchID or enter my password each time to login with passkeys.

Passkeys previously worked great for a long time with 1 click in the browser, please add a setting so we can go back to 1 click login with passkeys.

For some people the extra passkey security is great, but I’ve already unlocked my Mac and 1Password, so I should be able to continue logging in with passkeys with 1 click. This is a major downgrade to the ease of use. So exhausting having to lift my hand away from keyboard and mouse to use the TouchID sensor on Mac. 1Password used to be about ease of use, but lately there’s been so many extra steps just to login now. It’s so annoying having to use TouchID or Mac password to login with a passkey on every website.

Respecting the website wanting to verify passkeys has little impact on the user on an iPhone with the quick FaceID, however on a Mac it downgrades the ease of use.

Because of this, I along with other users will now just downgrade back to using username and passwords for all of our logins because of the ease of use with 1 click login.

Have you tried the type ahead feature? When the universal sign-in prompt appears, type the first letter of the username you’d like to sign in using. That should select the right passkey and then you can press enter to sign in using that passkey using just the keyboard. Does that help at all? I’m happy to pass along your feedback about type ahead to our team.

Thank you for the feedback! You can definitely revert back to the classic experience if you prefer that:

  1. Right click the 1Password icon in your browser’s toolbar and select Settings.
  2. Choose Autofill & save from the side menu.
  3. Toggle off Use universal sign-in for logins.

I hope that helps. And if you have any other feedback about the new experience then let us know!
