Feature Request: Rename Employee Vault in 1Password Business

Hello 1Password Team,

I’m writing on behalf of our organization, which uses 1Password Business. We find the default “Employee” vault name misleading for individual use, as many mistakenly assume it contains passwords for all employees.

This confusion is even greater in the German translation where it appears as “Angestellte” making it unclear that this vault is for personal credentials. It would be far more intuitive if this built‑in vault could either be renamed freely or, at minimum, default to “Personal” as it does in Family and Individual plans.

Proposed Improvement

  • Clearer Naming: Changing “Employee” to “Personal” (or allowing custom names) eliminates ambiguity, especially in non‑English locales.
  • Consistency: All other vaults in Business plans can be renamed; extending this to the default vault aligns with current functionality.
  • Improved Usability: Allowing organizations to set a meaningful name (e.g., “Personal,” “Private,” “My Vault”) streamlines onboarding and vault management.

    Hi 1P_Dave

Thank you for the feedback and for explaining the background on this change!

From our perspective, “Angestellte” remains misleading in German. Most users expect to find colleagues or generic employee accounts there and it’s also the feminine form of “Mitarbeiter” which adds unnecessary ambiguity.

In German, switching to “Persönlich” offers additional benefits. It avoids confusion with the plural and feminine noun “Angestellte” and circumvents the ongoing, politically charged debate over gender-inclusive language in German, a discussion that often complicates terminology decisions.

Thanks again for passing our input along to the product team!

  • Hello chris12739 and icyerasor! 👋

Thank you both for reaching out! Private vaults in 1Password Teams and Business accounts were changed to Employee vaults last year after customer feedback. The change was communicated to account owners and administrator on April 15th, 2024 via email. You can read more here: Private vaults in 1Password Teams and Business are now employee vaults

For the German translation we were previously using a different term, "Mitarbeiter", and we changed the name to "Angestellte" after feedback from other German users. I'm not a German speaker myself but I can pass along your feedback to the team, is there another German term that you would prefer? Some German customers have suggested "Der Angestellte", would that work better?

I think giving owners the options to select from Private, Personal, Only Me, or Employee for the vault name for their employees would be ideal even if it's not fully customizable to give us flexibility.  Many people use both personal and business accounts and the inconsistency between them can be confusing.   Also, "Employee" can be confusing for owners/admins because it makes it seems like a vault is used for HR/Employee accounts.  We already had a shared vault called "Employees" so the flexibility would be ideal for some businesses.

Many people use both personal and business accounts and the inconsistency between them can be confusing.

The feedback that our team received from many owners and admins was that using "Private vault" for both personal and business accounts was confusing and caused employees to accidentally store personal information in their work account and vice verse. That's why the change was made to rename the "Private vault" to "Employee vault" for 1Password Teams and Business accounts.

That being said, I can see how flexibility would be useful to certain organizations. I've passed your feedback along to the team internally.

Totally agree - its super misleading to speak of "Angestellte" (which is plural: employees) when the vault is only visible for oneself.
