1Password 7 on iOS presents inconsistent logins

I still use 1Password 7 as my organisational security policies doesn't allow sync via 1Password.com. This means that the 1Password extension doesn't show my logins on iOS Safari. Instead, I nominate 1P7 as the default password manager in iOS and disable the Passwords app. This works well but produces an inconsistent experience.

Occasionally, the option to log in with 1P7 is cleanly presented as a smiley face, which possibly indicates FaceID integration:

Other times and for most websites, the login appears in a messy way with a key icon above the keyboard, appearing to hook into Safari's inbuilt password manager:

Is there a way to force Safari always to offer direct FaceID login, or is this something that must be supported by the website? An explanation of what's going on behind the scenes would be helpful!

Thanks for reaching out! I just wanted to mention that 1Password 7 is no longer supported and hasn’t been updated or tested by our team in quite some time, so you may run into some unexpected behaviour. If your organization is interested, they can explore more about 1Password 8 and 1Password Business by getting in touch with our team for additional details.

That being said, both prompts you’re seeing, the one with the large blue button and the one above the keyboard, are generated by iOS itself. 1Password doesn’t display these prompts directly; it simply supplies the data through Apple’s iOS AutoFill technology. If 1Password is the only app enabled for AutoFill, then both prompts are pulling their data from 1Password.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to control which of the two prompts appears, since that’s determined entirely by iOS. That said, either option will let you fill your login credentials from 1Password using AutoFill: Use 1Password to save logins and sign in to apps and websites on your iPhone and iPad
