1Password 8.10.7 Mac locks when window closed

1Password is locking when I close the window (red X button). If I just hide the window (yellow — button) it remains unlocked.
This is a new behavior, perhaps coincidentally after returning from several days away from home. Previously, closing the window left 1Password unlocked.

I see nothing in Settings that would affect this behavior.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this. I thought I was just going crazy.

I do not have 1Password in the menu bar enabled since I have long used ⌥⌘\ to bring up Quick Access, née 1Password Mini.

I have found that shortcut to be less reliable than the old 1Password Mini days. I suspected it was because 1Password was being quit because I do not have it set to be available in the Menu Bar. Now I know that is indeed the case.

Today I got into this fun situation where I would click the 1P button in the browser toolbar, it would launch 1P so I could enter the password to unlock my vault, then it would close the window and send me back to the browser, quitting 1Password and starting the cycle all over again.

I'll put 1Password in the Menu Bar (and tuck it away with Bar Tender). It would be great if 1Password could run in the background without windows open on a Menu Bar icon, though.

Thanks for making a great product, helping keep my family and friends secure!

Thank you for the feedback. We do have an internal work item open to look into creating separate options to control when 1Password is in the menu bar and to keep 1Password running when all windows are closed and I've added your comments there so that our developers are aware that you'd like to see the change made.

For now, if you disable "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" and then close the main window, all of 1Password's background processes will quit as well. When all of 1Password's processes quit the app is automatically locked.

1P_Dave Hmm I would consider this a regression. I understand wanting the 1Password app to close after the main window closes, but if the explicit auto-lock timeout has not elapsed then the app should absolutely re-open in an unlocked state. The auto-lock settings mention either "Lock on sleep, screensaver, or switching users" or "Lock after the computer is idle for ...". Main window close falls under neither of those options, so I don't expect auto-lock to trigger on main window close.

The difference in locking behavior whether you have the "Menu icon" on/off sounds like a bug. The settings menu doesn't mention anything about this effect. And too many apps have forced themselves into my menu bar that I can't see some of them behind my MacBook's camera notch, so personally I don't consider keeping 1Password in my Menu Bar a viable workaround (nor is installing additional software, paid or not, to hide it from the menu bar).

This has been driving me crazy the last week or so because the SSH Agent now also completely shuts down when the 1Password app main window isn't open, even if the auto-lock timeout hasn't elapsed. It doesn't even respond to key requests anymore :(

Thank you for the feedback. Hopefully the team can further refine the experience here in the future.

It looks like when I close the 1Password window it now locks me out. I have to have the menubar feature running in order for it not to do this. I find this new feature fairly annoying. I have used Bartender before but it's not for me. Thanks

  • @timofeypiper

No, not currently. I'd be happy to the let the team know you're interested in this ability. I use Bartender to keep 1Password in menu bar out of my main bar. It's not a free app, but worth the small cost in my opinion. I've been using it for years now. There may also be free alternatives available. I'm not familiar with those.

Is there a way to hide the 1Password menubar icon and keep running it in the background like before?

  • I'm glad to hear that my suggestion helped. 🙂

  • Hello stephenhart! 👋

The latest version of 1Password 8 fixes a bug where, when the menu bar icon is disabled, 1Password wouldn't immediately close after the user closed the main window. You can have 1Password continue to run in the background (and stay unlocked until your auto-lock settings kick in) by following these steps:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Settings.
    4. Click on General.
    5. Turn "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" on.

Let me know if that doesn't work.
