1Password and the GNOME system icon tray
While I am using Linux (Fedora 42 Workstation with GNOME 48.4), this impacts me as well.
As GNOME doesn't have a system icon tray by default, it usually puts background applications in the background app section of the quick settings menu but as far as I can tell this doesn't happen with 1Password. I have the option for the menu bar icon selected but as the desktop environment doesn't support icons, when I close 1Password leaves me with an unlocked browser and I have to launch the application to see this. While this is suitable for my needs it's not the way a user would expect the app to work and if they're naive about this could present a security risk.
What would be preferable is for 1Password to have an option to properly run as a background service so that the user is made aware in the quick settings panel independent of the option to have an icon since it isn't altogether clear that the latter option controls the former, particularly on systems where there is no concept of a system tray. This would not only alleviate confusion about the function of placing the icon there, it would have the additional effect of addressing konsk1's concern about users on desktop environments with a system tray having an icon they don't need or want.

Makes sense but it's a bummer. maybe it could be documented somewhere in the installation instructions for linux users if it isn't already.

I know I came across the fact that app icon in fact lets the app run in the background but it was only by chance that I learned that "closing" the app in GNOME doesn't actually stop it from keeping the browser unlocked. There is a place in GNOME to see applications running in the background and it doesn't appear there (there is also no option in the GNOME Settings to allow it to run in the background) so this behavior is unexpected. You can see in the screenshot the place to view backgrounded, windowless apps and the unlocked browser extension.

Hello Recent_Convert! 👋
Thank you for the feedback! 1Password for Linux used to use Libappindicator to place an icon into the system tray but this was made an optional dependency back in 2021 since requiring it was causing issues for users who were trying to run the app without having this library installed.
If you'd like to see the system tray icon then you can try to install Libappindicator. That being said, I've shared your feedback and suggestions with the team internally.
