1Password as FIDO2 token via NFC

I’m an avid user of 1Password, and with the growing support for passkeys, the app has become essential to my daily routine. The ability to log in to services with passkeys not only enhances security but also greatly improves the user experience.

Currently, this positive experience is limited to my mobile phone and the personal computers I own. However, I can’t replicate it on computers that don’t belong to me. I either can’t or don’t want to install 1Password—and thus my password safe—on every computer I use. For example, on my work computer (which I’m allowed to use for personal purposes), installing 1Password isn’t feasible, so I can’t log in to services there. My only workaround would be to use an external FIDO2 token.

A while ago, I read that Apple plans to open its Secure Element and NFC reader to developers on iPhones (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/08/developers-can-soon-offer-in-app-nfc-transactions-using-the-secure-element/). After a quick read, it appears this would allow using 1Password via the iPhone NFC reader as an external FIDO2/NFC token. This means I could use 1Password to log in to FIDO2-supported services on any computer equipped with an NFC reader.

This new feature would significantly enhance 1Password’s usability for me, removing barriers to widespread adoption of passwordless authentication with FIDO2/passkeys. At the moment, I only use passkeys experimentally, but if this feature is implemented, I would start using them regularly.

My questions are:

Will this feature be added to 1Password?
If yes, is there a timeline for its release?
