1Password doesn't support Wikipedia / Wikimedia's requirement for separate security key vs password
The following issue could be resolved either in Wikimedia software or in 1Password software.
If Wikimedia's software is the best place to make a fix, I would hope 1Password the company would have the capability and and desire to help the Wikimedia Foundation do this properly while maintaining the unique security and privacy needs of their contributors as described in https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/09/08/protecting-the-people-some-recommendations-for-safety-while-contributing-to-wikimedia-projects/
Steps to reproduce
- Create a Wikipedia / Wikimedia account.
- Visit account security settings https://auth.wikimedia.org/enwiki/wiki/Special:AccountSecurity
- Note that Wikipedia first requires a security key set as a prerequisite for a passkey.
Passkey for simplified secure login cannot be added without first adding 2FA. - Create a security key, save the backup codes for recovery, and see that 1Password saves it as a passkey.
- Create a passkey, see that 1Password overwrites your Wikipedia security key with the Wikipedia passkey.
2FA security key is deleted by 1Password after adding passkey! - Recover your account by deleting security key from Wikipedia, which as of today also automatically deleted the passkey and recovery codes as well.
