2FA via passkey on a mobile device

When I log into 1password.com, it asks for my email, password, and security key. Then, in the next step, it asks for my 2FA, providing two choices: an external security key or "use a passkey from a device with a camera." I always use my external security key; however, after logging in, I don't see any option to set up a passkey on my mobile device for the second factor method. The only options available are physical keys and a 2FA app. Is there a third option for using a passkey via my mobile device instead of the external keys that I might be missing?

Thanks!

Thanks, Gary, for clarifying. I was confused when I saw the passkey option in the authentication window and thought there might be additional options I wasn’t aware of. Noted for next time. Thank you

    Hi there chris000

You can't use a passkey for two-factor authentication on your 1Password account – only hardware security keys and authenticator apps are supported.

Hardware security keys work in a very similar way to passkeys. It's not exactly accurate to say that it's like a passkey that's bound to a USB stick, but for our purposes here, that's close enough.

As such, you might see passkey-related messages or interfaces, like the option to scan a QR code, when using a hardware security key for two-factor authentication. As you've noticed, you can bypass that and use a hardware security key from that prompt.

Hope that helps clear things up, but let me know if you have questions. :)
