Auto-Lock totally doesn't work

Hey there,

I’ve been battling this for months now — 1Password keeps locking itself after just a few minutes, no matter what I do. And this driving me nuts!

As you can see in the attached screenshot, I’ve explicitly set:
- Auto-lock: Disabled (Never)
- Touch ID: Enabled
- Password confirmation: Every 30 days

All the checkboxes related to auto-lock are off, and yet, the app continues to lock itself randomly after short periods of inactivity.

This has persisted across both macOS Sequoia and Tahoe, and I was honestly hoping the upgrade would fix it. No dice. All permissions are granted, everything is up to date (did every laptop reset I could), I know I’m not the only one.... forums show plenty of users hitting the same wall.

Can someone from the team please take this seriously?
It’s making 1Password unusable for actual workflows. PLEASE.

MacBook Pro, M1 Max.

And yes, let’s be real: since the move to Electron, the desktop app has felt laggy, brittle, and just overall worse. This issue is a perfect example of where things used to work fine but now feel like a regression — both technically and in user experience.

  • Hello dom! 👋

I'm sorry that 1Password is locking unexpectedly on your Mac. So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me the following:

    1. Are you just using a personal 1Password account that you unlock using an account password? Or are you also using a Teams/Business account that you unlock using an identity provider like Google, Okta, or Microsoft Entra?
    2. Is the menubar icon turned on for the 1Password desktop app?
    3. Are you using high performance screen sharing on your Mac?

I look forward to hearing from you.

I noticed the 2nd point when I switched from 1P 7 to 1P 8. With the older app, there was a background service and I was able to open the quick access with a shortcut. With 1P 8, it isn't possible any more. And there is no mention of this in the settings. There, it just says 1P remains "available in the menu bar" without any hint, that 1P locks itself instantly after closing and that the quick access does not work any more.

Would it possible to bring this feature back (quick access without menu bar icon)? And if not, why?
I need the space in the menu bar since Apple introduced the notch ;-)

Welcome to the community! Without the menu bar icon, 1Password could be unlocked and running in the background without you knowing about it. This poses security and privacy concerns and the menu bar icon gives you a visual indicator that 1Password is still running even if you've closed the main window. That being said, I'll pass your feedback and request along to our team for their consideration.

There are a few different third-party apps out there that will allow you to hide unwanted menu bar icons, I know that they're pretty popular with folks in the Mac community.

macOS Tahoe also has a switch to turn the menu bar icon off and on for different apps if you're already running the latest version of macOS.
