Bring Back the Standalone Password Generator in Android – Not Just Hidden in Login Creation
Hello 1Password team and fellow users,
I'd like to revisit a long-standing feature request that I’ve found repeated in several older threads — but never fully addressed: the ability to use the password generator independently in the Android app, without being forced to create a new login item first.
I’ve seen past posts where this was requested , and most responses follow a pattern:
- Users didn’t realize the password generator appears during login creation.
- A moderator kindly explains how to trigger it by creating a new item.
- The user says thanks, and the thread ends.
However, that’s not the whole story.
Many of us — myself included — already know this workaround. But the problem isn’t ignorance — it’s that it’s a poor user experience.
In real-world usage, we often encounter modern and fragmented sign-up processes:
- Email-first → verify → redirected to create password
- SMS-based onboarding → password setup comes much later
- Multi-step captchas, in-app flows, or jumping between tabs or apps
These flows don’t align neatly with creating a login item upfront. We often need a password generator midway through a process, without any context where a login makes sense yet. And faking a dummy item just to access the generator feels like a workaround that no longer fits the sophistication of 1Password’s overall design.
Yes, there are third-party password generators online — but I’ve come to really trust and rely on 1Password’s generator and its history tracking, like in the browser extension. It’s streamlined, consistent, and secure — everything a good UX should be.
All I’m asking is for 1Password to bring that same level of elegance and independence to the Android app. A standalone generator (like on desktop and browser) would make the mobile experience complete — and remove a daily point of friction for many loyal users.
What do you think?
Have you run into similar situations where the current flow just doesn't work well?
Would a dedicated password generator make your Android experience smoother?
Let’s hear your thoughts — I’d love to know how widespread this frustration is, and whether others would support this idea as well.

Thank you very much for your reply, Dave.
And thank you as well to AJCxZ0 and Tamara (Crazy4Happy) for sharing your valuable thoughts.Dave, your points were very logical and easy to understand. I agree that even in cases that may seem irregular at first glance, it’s often possible to handle them through 1Password’s “New Item Creation” UX.
That said, my perspective is closer to what Tamara (Crazy4Happy) mentioned. In practice, account registrations often don’t succeed on the first attempt. Personally, I always make sure to log in with the newly created credentials after registering. The reason is that some sites don’t clearly state their password requirements—such as length or allowable symbols—and in some cases they don’t even display error messages after input. In those situations, the only way to confirm is to attempt logging in again. (Of course, this is a UX issue on the site’s side, but unfortunately, it’s the reality we face.)
Especially when you make a habit of using long and complex passwords (as I believe many 1Password users do), the likelihood of failed registrations increases. In such cases, the process ends up being trial and error: guessing the requirements and retrying until successful.
Only after the registration finally works and I can log in successfully do I save the item in 1Password.Because of this workflow, having a function to “simply generate a password” would be extremely helpful.
I understand this may partly come down to personal preference or habit. However, for me, I don’t particularly like the idea of creating a new item in 1Password solely for the purpose of generating a password. Each time I do so, multiple new items get created, and later I have to go back and clean them up—which doesn’t feel very smart or efficient.

Hello shigeomix and Crazy4Happy! 👋
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we can make 1Password work better for your use cases. I'd like to learn more about why the current workflow wouldn't work for your examples:
- Email-first → verify → redirected to create password
- SMS-based onboarding → password setup comes much later
- Multi-step captchas, in-app flows, or jumping between tabs or apps
In all of these examples, wouldn't creating a new Login item using 1Password for Android still be the easiest way to generate a password even if there was a standalone password generator in the app? Currently:
- Open 1Password for Android.
- Create a new Login item.
- Generate a new password and save the item.
- Copy the password to your clipboard to paste into the website in question.
With a standalone password generator:- Open 1Password for Android.
- Access the standalone password generator.
- Generate a new password.
- Copy the password to your clipboard to paste into the website in question.
- Go back to 1Password and create a new Login item.
- Paste the password that you created using the standalone password generator into the Login item. Then save the item.
Let me know if I misunderstood the workflow that you're using.-Dave

A fair an accurate assessment of the effort involved in the case of creating a Login which we intend to use to access an account managed by 1Password.
In all the other cases in which we just need a password which satisfies all the requirements, given that we have the 1Password app installed and your password generator is still not a PWA, the workflow would be
- Open 1Password for Android, and
- tap the "Generate Password" button.
This would generate the password, put it in the cut buffer (whatever that may correctly be called on Android), making it available to paste wherever it's needed.
Bear in mind that while we're calling this a password, it's really just a string of characters which may be used for a variety of purposes.Chargen services are rare these days.

Hello Dave,
When you type it out like that, it does seem logical and more efficient. :)
The problem is, Android is not always that clean. To be fair, if there is a web option to create an account, I will always do that first before even attempting it on my phone because it's more clean. That being said, there are some apps that only have a mobile presence. The issue I sometimes find myself in is not knowing I'm going to need to generate an account. I might be in the middle of a process when suddenly I need to create an account. 1Password does not typically present in those instances like it does in a browser and I am faced with needing a password in that instant. In that instant (for me), it's easier to generate the password and save in a note until I'm ready to create the item in 1Password. Judge it all you want, that is what works for me. Even in the browser, I tend to generate the password even though one is suggested for me, so that I can paste it into notepad until I can verify it's in 1Password. I have been burned before with 1Password not saving my password (having a glitch of some sort) and then having to go through a Forgot Password situation. So, until I know it's in 1Password, I will paste it in Notepad. I'm trying to be more trusting and use the 1Password suggested, but it's a struggle (I'm seeking help 😁)
Having a standalone password generator can also be nice when needing to just simply generate a password to give to someone else (something I'm not saving). I'm an IT Security Engineer and I find myself generating passwords quite frequently. I typically use the browser extension as it's readily available, but sometimes my phone is my only option at the time.
There is a standalone option in the browser extension and there used to be in the app. It would be nice to have it back in the app. Sometimes, I really just need to generate a password. Simple as that.
Thanks for responding and hoping I made sense. Sorry for rambling.

If 1Password made their A Secure, Strong Password Generator a portable web app (PWA), then all desktop and mobile clients could use it as a native application.
Nevertheless, having the generator function available in the applications would be useful.

Absolutely agree, this is a huge frustration. Not sure why it was removed. Sometimes, I just want to generate a password.
