Curious about some of the sync specifics

(My profile: I'm running 1P 8.10.68 on my iPhone and iPad, and 8.10.70 on Mac.)

Coming from a different password manager over to 1P quite recently, it seems that 1P syncs my data quite differently than the old one.  My old app sometimes had various sync issues, and I'm just wanting to know if 1P does things similarly or not.  So I have a few questions about what happens "under the hood".

I realize the comprehensive answers to my questions might be quite involved, but I'm just looking for the basics, with no need for all the arcane minutia (which is critical, but not what I'm after here).  Specifically:

  1. How quickly after creating or modifying an item does 1P sync generally send my changes to the cloud?
  2. When such a sync occurs, does 1P have to write the entire vault to the cloud, or just the modified item(s)?
  3. What, then, triggers my other 1P devices to receive the latest change(s)?  Does it wait until I next open 1P on each device, or is there some other process that accomplishes this (and if so, when or how fast does this generally happen)?
  4. And when the other devices receive the latest vault data, do they copy down the entire vault(s) from the 1P cloud, or just those items that have changed?

Thanks!

  • Hello 1Canid! 👋

Thanks for the questions! When you save a new item, or edit an existing item, those changes should appear on all of your devices (and on 1Password.com) almost instantly depending on the speed of your internet connection. If you're adding files to an item then those can take longer to upload and download to all of your devices depending on the file size.

Only your recent changes are shared when you modify an item, otherwise you'd see a very big delay if you've saved a lot of files and 1Password had to continually re-download your entire vault when you save a single new item.

    I hope that helps. 🙂
