MacOS: Upon unlocking, 1Password app hides and moves to last place in app switcher

Hi! This is really weird. The past several weeks (months?) I've noticed on Mac OS that when:

  • 1Password is locked
  • I open the app
  • Prompted for Touch ID, I provide my fingerprint
  • 1Password unlocks (yay), but then:
  • 1Password is hidden (window goes to the background) and
  • 1Password moves to "last place" (far right side) in the application switcher (triggered by command-tab)

This is really weird and slightly annoying, because not only does the app seem to disappear just as I'm needing to use it, but doing a quick command-tab (muscle memory!) does not return me to 1Password as I'd expect.  Instead, it returns me to my third-most-recently-used app, if that makes sense. Weirdly, 1Password is all the way to the far right side.

I have never seen any app "break" this standard Mac OS behavior; I've only seen this with 1Password. 🤷‍♂️

This does not happen when opening the 1Password app if it is already unlocked. In that case, the app behaves normally. (Whew!)

  • MacOS 14.6.1
  • 1Password for Mac 8.10.64 (81064007)
  • Used mostly with Safari 17.6 (19618.3.11.11.5) (although this isn't a browser extension issue)

  • I have the exact same issue.
    I open 1Password through Spotlight.
I'm referring to the main window. The app I used before opening 1Password comes to the foreground.

I'm sorry that you're running into an issue where another app gets focused after opening 1Password. I haven't yet been able to reproduce the issue, can you tell me the following:

      1. Are you able to reproduce the issue over and over again reliably? Or does it only occur randomly and intermittently?
      2. Which version of macOS and 1Password are you using?

I look forward to hearing from you.

        1. Yes, I can reliably and repeatedly reproduce the issue. It happens every time I unlock 1Password on Mac with the fingerprint. Interestingly, it doesn't happen when I enter the master password. But then, after I hit "enter" and it unlocks, the app prompts me to use my fingerprint as well.

        2. I'm on Sonoma 14.2.1 and 1Password for Mac 8.10.70 (81070026).

        Cheers

  • Hello scott2023! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing unexpected behaviour with 1Password and the macOS App Switcher. I've tried to reproduce the same behaviour on my end but I'm not seeing the same thing. So that I can better understand the situation, can you tell me the following:

    1. How are you opening 1Password? By right-clicking on the menu bar icon and clicking Open 1Password? By using a keyboard shortcut? Some other way?
    2. At step 5 you say that the 1Password app disappears, are you referring to the main window? What app comes to the foreground?

I look forward to hearing from you.

      1P_DaveThank you for the reply!

      1. I am usually opening 1Password via Alfred (app launcher). I'll trigger Alfred (command-space), then type "1p" and enter.
      2. Yes, the main app window disappears, as though I hit command-H or chose "hide 1Password" from the menu. Except that 1Password is also moved to "last place" in the app switcher.

I made a screen recording just now but don't want to share it here, since it shows some personal info. How could I get you a link to my recording privately?
