Safari extension performance

In the past couple weeks, I've had increasingly bad performance by the 1Password Safari extension. The field-based dropdown doesn't...drop down. The browser bar-based icon won't open, either. I'll click on both and nothing happens. Until maybe 5 minutes later well after I've manually cut & pasted a password from the desktop app.

Clearly the app is unlocked, but the extension doesn't reflect the same status. Most of the time it just appears frozen. Maybe eventually it unlocks itself, but by then I'm long past the need for it. This is unacceptable and really just defeats the purpose of the extension.

Of course, I've checked that I have the most recent version, I've tried killing the browser process and restarting, I've just nuked and reinstalled the extension--none of that seems to make a difference. Next time I open the browser, still the same slow performance.

Any other ideas?

  • Hello trigrman! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into performance issues with 1Password for Safari. It sounds like something might be going wrong with the connection between the browser extension and the desktop app. Can you try the following test:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Turn off "Turn off "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app".

Now with app integration temporarily turned off, do you still see a delay when unlocking 1Password for Safari using your account password? Or are things snappier now?

1P_Dave Thank you for posting this solution! I had the same issue as trigrman. Since updating my Mac OS from v14 to Sonoma (15.4.1, latest), the 1Password browser extension has been sloooooooooow to open that little panel in the toolbar. I timed it, it takes about 6 seconds — long enough that it can be faster for me to switch to the desktop app, copy my info, and paste it back in Safari.

Anyway with the fix you posted above (decoupling the extension from the desktop app), it's now very snappy again. I will try living this way (with having to "unlock" each app separately) for a while and see how it goes. 😁

I'm happy that the workaround helps. If you decide to turn app integration back on in the future and run into the same issue then I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser:

Send a diagnostics report (browser extension)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

        With your email please include:

        • A link to this thread: https://www.1password.community/discussions/1password/safari-extension-performance/151906
        • Your forum username: scott2023

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number.  Please post that number here.  Thanks very much!

I did this amongst other stuff to re-connect the browser extension to the app, and that seemed to make things behave better. Though I still really struggle with the Passkey functionality, especially logging into Google. That doesn't work well no matter what I do.
