Setting up authentication on a second phone

I have setup 2-factor authentication for 1 Password in Microsoft Authenticator on my iPhone. It works OK. I now want to setup 2-factor authentication in Microsoft Authenticator on my wife’s iPhone. 1Password allows a second authenticator to be setup but only using a physical key like Yubikey. I find this unacceptably inconvenient on a mobile phone. Microsoft Authenticator lets me backup Authenticator data to my iCloud account. I ca then transfer/restore that data to another phone. However, my wife’s phone has a different iCloud account, so the Authenticator backup data is not available on her phone. I tried to login in to my iCloud account on my wife’s phone, thinking that maybe I could then do an Authenticator Restore but I was unable to login. Password and username are correct. I now have no idea how to transfer the Microsoft Authenticator data on my phone, to my wife’s phone. This now a real problem for us. Appreciate some advice.

  • Hello pco10! 👋

Thank you for the question! I understand that you'd like to save your 2FA one-time password for your 1Password account in the Microsoft Authenticator app on both your phone and your wife's phone. You do so by following these steps:

    1. Log in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app).
    2. Select your name in the top right, then select Manage Account.
    3. Select More Actions > Manage Two-Factor Authentication.
    4. Click Turn Off Two-Factor Authentication.
    5. Delete the one-time password from Microsoft Authenticator.
    6. Follow the steps to turn two-factor authentication back on but this time scan the same QR code using the Microsoft Authenticator app on both your phone and your wife's phone to add the same one-time password to both apps.

    I hope that helps.
