On top of that, you can't move all your private items to a new account in one swoop. No way I'm moving 100s of items one at a time.

You should be able to export all your vaults from one account and import them into another. That may count as two swoops, but the client should handle the conversion from freedom to modern units.
It appears that you might simply be able to cancel your current subscription, then start a new one without any impact to your data, however I would not rely on this working perfectly when it's so easy to securely back up your data.
Nevertheless, to change your subscription I suggest contacting 1Password Billing Support.

That still means I have to go around to all my family members and help them out with this.

If "That" is my comment addressing your ability to export and import all vaults, and none of your family members who use 1Password are able to do this unassisted by anyone except you, then I'm sure you're right.
If "That" is my suggestion to contact support to get the actual solution to your problem, then I'm sure that you can handle this by yourself.
Please follow up here with the solution; that is unless 1Password_Community chimes in with the official answer.
