Feature request: Unlock with phone

There has been a couple of these requests previously [1] [2] but apparently closed due to the "insecure" nature of it. I cant how see that is inherent in the feature request so let me make a proposal how to implement it.

  1. On the locked screen in the browser or desktop application display a button "Request unlock from phone".
  2. Your service triggers a notification on the phone
  3. The notification on the phone opens the 1password app with camera access
  4. The browser or desktop application now displays a QR code containing a locally generated cryptographic key
  5. The user scans the QR code with the app
  6. App encrypts a key to unlock the vault and transmits it via. 1password infrastructure to the browser or desktop application
  7. The browser or desktop application can now decrypt the vault key and unlock the vault

I am sure you have experts on staff that can verify this or come up with something better. Looking forward to hearing from you!

  • Hello spand! πŸ‘‹

Thank you for the request! The team is currently testing an exciting new way to unlock 1Password using a passkey, you can read more here:

When unlocking 1Password with a passkey, you can scan a QR code using your phone's camera and unlock 1Password using a passkey saved on your phone.

If you decide to give the beta a try then let me know what you think. πŸ™‚

For iPhone, would it be stored in iCloud Keychain? [ Hope not … I would never rely on iCloud which is known for losing data here and there ]

Thanks for the reply. You can store a passkey in the location of your choice, including iCloud Keychain.

That being said, we've just announced a brand new sign-in experience in beta that doesn't require the use of a passkey. I think you'll be happy to see it: New Sign-In Experience (Beta) β€” 1Password Community

Let me know if that fits what you're looking for. πŸ™‚
