Android version of 1Password can’t use biometric unlock – always asks for master password
Hello,
I'm using 1Password for Android on a Xiaomi 15 and am experiencing a major issue. Even though I’ve enabled biometric authentication (fingerprint) in the settings and selected "Never confirm with Master Password," the app still forces me to enter my account password every time I open it. It completely ignores the biometric unlock. Switching to "Use device unlock" doesn’t help either – it still only lets me type a password.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far, none of which worked:
- Updated to the latest version from the Play Store (including beta releases).
- Turned biometric unlock off and on again and re-enrolled my fingerprints.
- Cleared the app data and reinstalled.
- Set 1Password’s background management to "Unlimited" in the system settings to ensure it isn’t killed in the background.
- Restarted the phone, reinstalled the app multiple times and re-added the account.
None of these steps solved the problem. On one occasion it randomly started working for a short time, but the issue returned shortly afterwards. It seems to be an official bug. Is there any other workaround? Are the developers aware of this issue, and is there any progress on a fix that I can follow?
Thank you!
Thanks, Dave! I appreciate your quick response and willingness to help.
In the meantime, I found a workaround that resolved the issue for me: I uninstalled the latest version and installed an older build ("1Password: Password Manager 8.11.0 (120-640dpi)"). Fingerprint unlock worked properly in that version. After setting everything up and confirming it worked, I updated to the latest release via Google Play. The biometric unlock has continued to work normally since then.
Hope this helps anyone else running into the same problem. Thanks again for your support!

Have the same issue, can confirm the marked solution works, at least temporarily not sure if the problem will return or not when the device blocks itself after the default 14 days.
Had this issue on a Oneplus Nord 2 5G running the latest firmware (October 2025 security patch) OxygenOS 13 which is Android 13. This problem happened despite me having this phone with 1 password for a few years, so the 1password application was not a new installation.
Additionally was able to test this on another Nord 2 5G which was factory reset and the problem was present there on a new installation of 1password.
I was also able to get it working without the marked solution, if I removed all biometrics, enabled 1 single fingerprint, and also enabled the "App Lock" setting (not sure if this is an android setting or an oxygenOS setting), but as soon as I had more than 1 fingerprint, or face unlock it stopped working, and it did not matter the order in which I enabled these biometrics, even after disabling the biometric unlock and reenabling it on 1password
There was 1 point where I didn't have face unlock but 2 fingerprints, and 1password did ask for the fingerprint but gave an error when I used the fingerprint.

I am having this same issue with biometrics. I will try the marked solution and report back.

I followed up with 1P tech supp. In the end, changing the Biometric setting to another and setting it back to Fingerprint cleared the issue in my case.

Hello atooy! 👋
I'm sorry that biometric unlock isn't working with 1Password on your Xiaomi 15 device. We have received other reports, which seem isolated to folks using Xiaomi 15 and certain Motorola devices, of similar behavior.
So that I can confirm whether you're running into this known issue, I'd like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from your Android device:
Send a diagnostics report (Android)
Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com
With your email please include:- A link to this thread: https://www.1password.community/discussions/1password/android-version-of-1password-can%E2%80%99t-use-biometric-unlock-%E2%80%93-always-asks-for-master/161250
