How to turn off the Apple Passwords app

Hi … I’ve been using 1Password on my home MacBook/iPad/iPhone for years, and have been quite satisfied with it and the many features. I’ve looked at the Apple PASSWORD APP, but find it is lacking in many of the features I value and use with 1Password.

Is there an easy way (sorry … I’m comfortable with technology, but I’m not a technical person) to turn off the Apple PASSWORD APP, so that I’m just using 1PASSWORD for my security needs?

Thanks in advance … Jay-Dee

  • Thanks Tom … I used the wrong term … thanks for catching that error. I’m totally Apple … MacBook, iPhone and iPad. For now I’ll stick with the password.app.

  • Hello JayDeePurdie! 👋

Thanks for the question! You can turn off Apple Passwords for the entire Mac by doing the following:

    1. Click on the apple logo in the top right corner of the screen in your menubar, then click System settings
    2. Click General
    3. Click Autofill & Passwords
    4. Turn off "Autofill Passwords and Passkeys".

I recommend that you also follow the steps in this guide to turn off the built-in password manager in your browser: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

On your iPhone and iPad, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Tap General > AutoFill & Passwords.
    3. Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.
    4. Turn off Apple Passwords.
    5. Turn on 1Password.

Let me know if you run into any issues.

  • As I mentioned in my original post, “I’m comfortable with technology, but I’m not a technical person.” I’m just finding 1Password too complex to use across my three platforms, so for now I’m going to turn off 1Password and stick with the Apple password.app. Granted, 1Password has some great features not available in the password.app, but my focus is on maintaining my account information in the simplest way possible. Until the password.app came along, 1Password was great. But I’m just getting tired of being prompted by both apps. For the immediate future, I’ll hang onto my 1Password database until I feel comfortable that my account/password management is settled on my three platforms.

Hi JayDeePurdie maybe you missed my reply or 1P_Dave's, but 'across platforms' mostly means other than just android, microsoft or apple. If you are 'all-in' on apple it might make sense to further rely on their password .app. But if you are truly multi-platform that doesn't pan out, as you won't get cross-platform sync. The best way to do that is, as I indicated in my reply, stick to 1password and just 'turn off' the Apple specific (or firefox specific, or chrome specific) one(s) and make sure you have only one left.

On iOS go to settings and look for passwords and fill and you should land on a page with apple. 1p and chrome. You can disable apple there. macOS should be roughly the same
