Would you be able to provide a screenshot to help illustrate your desire? At face value it seems like tags may fill your needs. You might give this topic a look around nested tags.  I do have to say that your query sparked my interest as I am also someone with a lot of notes. Not as many as you but mine are in the hundreds. So I am keen on finding out anything that might help wrangle my notes better. Thanks in advance.
