Teaching 20-something to use 1Password

Hi there. I have a 20-something daughter who has been a part of my family plan for years, but never uses 1Password. I've tried to explain to her not only how to use it, but why she should be using it, but of course, it all falls on deaf ears. This is especially true since I'm "dad," and I couldn't possibly know anything. To that end, where can I find some how-to videos on why using a password manager is so hugely important and how to use it easily – they have to be videos as she won't read anything that I send her. She wanted me to pay her college tuition yesterday, and sent me screenshots of her credentials. I suggested that her password was terrible (as did the words to the right of her actual password!), and she said that it was easy to remember and that she's only used it in a few places! 😣

Hi kappabear! That's an interesting dilemma, and I suspect a common one as well. For me, it was an uphill battle getting my parents onboard with the idea of using a password manager. I'll be curious to hear what other resources and solutions Community members have used.

I came across a couple video's recently from the CSE that might be a helpful crash course (please note this is not an endorsement from myself or 1Password). There were a few points in the videos that I didn't entirely agree with, or thought might be a little out of date, but they're quick, accessible, and hammer home the importance of strong passwords stored in password managers. These are the two I was looking at:

As for using 1Password, we have a playlist of videos here that can be helpful when you're getting started. While more reading heavy, our autofill guides for 1Password in the browser, and the mobile device in question are also a good place to start:

It might be a bit more to your interest than your daughter's, but we also had a great interview with a member of the Family Online Safety Institute in a recent episode of our podcast, Random but Memorable. It covered tips for families to discuss and practice online safety. You can find that episode here or in your podcatcher of choice.

There is overwhelming evidence for and advice to use a password manager (and other matters of digital hygiene) from a wide variety of reputable and authoritative sources including videos by many sources including 1Password. I suspect that these will all be similarly unpersuasive to your target audience.

Typically such persuasive advice needs to come from a source trusted by the audience. Usually this is a peer or someone whom we may appropriately call an influencer in the parlance of our times. The ideal source is the audience themselves, but making that happen is tricky and natural occurrences often involve some suffering.

Coercion is an option in this type of situation, but judging the costs and benefits is something only you can do.
