Because the attachment may be needed by several items, hence linking to one source, rather than having several repeat copies of the same attachment item.

Also not just file attachments. Linking one regular item to another if they are related in any way. Could be a login item for Boots, linking to a membership item for my Boots card. Ideally you’d want item links between them both in both directions

That's an interesting way to do it. I usually just add a "Card" section to the Login item, and list the fields for it under there, so all the "Boots" related info is under one item.
But I can see your way is an alternative method.

In my method, it keeps the items separated by their type. A Login item for a username/password and a Membership item for the card. A bi-directional link make sense in this setup.
I can understand your option, put everything related to Boots in one item, but that doesn't separate the types.
Interesting see both approaches though!
