Beta Release: New MSIX Installer for 1Password for Windows

Hello 1Password Community!

We are excited to announce the beta launch of the MSIX installer for 1Password for Windows. The MSIX installer combines the benefits of our existing EXE and MSI installers, meaning that you no longer need to compromise between features that are exclusive to the EXE or MSI. Like MSI installations, MSIX installs to a directory that requires admin privileges to modify, providing additional tamper-proofing measures. In addition to this, MSIX offers an improved ability to detect other common forms of tampering, notifying the user and giving them the option to repair or reset the install.

 EXEMSIMSIX
Protected install*
Improved tamper detection
ARM64 support
In-app updates
Access to Beta and Nightly channels
*Protected install refers to installing in a directory requiring admin privileges to modify, providing additional tamper-proofing measures against threats such as local malware.

Accessing the Beta:

We’d love for you to try out the MSIX beta and provide feedback about your experience. To try out the beta, first make sure that you are running Windows 10 20H1 or later. Then, download the installer by clicking on this link and install 1Password.

Additional Notes:

When will the MSIX be officially released? We are looking to officially launch MSIX in late-June of this year, both as a direct download from our website and via the Microsoft Store.

Do I need to uninstall 1Password before installing the MSIX version? It’s recommended but not required. Once the MSIX is installed, you’ll no longer be able to open other versions of 1Password and will be prompted to uninstall old versions, if opened.

Can I use the MSIX beta long-term? Yes! Over the course of the beta, you’ll be locked to the beta channel, but once the MSIX is officially released, you will be able to switch to Stable and Nightly channels upon updating.

Where can I learn more about MSIX? Check out this Microsoft article on MSIX to learn more.

Where can I ask questions and/or provide feedback about the MSIX installer? Feel free to ask your questions and/or provide feedback directly in this thread.

  • Delay to Microsoft Store release of MSIX installer (1Password for Windows)

    Hello 1Password Community!

Last month, we released the new MSIX installer for 1Password for Windows to 1Password.com with plans to release to the Microsoft Store on September 8.

Due to some issues incurred while publishing the MSIX listing, the listing has not yet been made available in the Microsoft Store. We are working to get the new listing published as soon as possible. Future updates will be provided in this thread.

    Thank you for your patience!

Check out this page to learn more about the MSIX installer.

It looks like the version of the installed msix package is part of the installation path.

The following ends up in my .gitconfig when configuring commit signing:

    [gpg "ssh"]
    	program = C:\\Program Files\\WindowsApps\\Agilebits.1Password_8.10.78.39_x64__gh85et3mt782r\\1Password\\app\\8\\op-ssh-sign.exe

Basically this means that you'd have to reconfigure commit signing after every update, which is far from ideal.

Note that there will be a linked executable in the userprofile. i.e. %localappdata%\Microsoft\WindowsApps\op-ssh-sign.exe. It will probably be on the path by default. The automatic process of editing the .gitconfig file should act accordingly.

Appreciate you sharing this with us. Will have our developers take a closer look!

  • Installed the MSIX version to test the new passkey feature once Windows enables it, and it seems like the browser connection has broken. It keeps asking for the password, even with the application unlocked.

Retried with the normal .exe and it works flawlessly.

Dealbreaker for testing. Oh well, will roll back and wait for the fix.

The browser integration is working for me, but 1Password does ask for the account password when restarted instead of just requiring my PIN, as set in the settings.

This is reproducible on both of my PCs.

The regular install didn't have this issue.

If I want to install MSIX version should I remove 1Password EXE/MSI installed version? Secondly will be some restrictions, limited functionality with MSIX installed 1Password? For an example Yubico Authenticator from Microsoft Store doesn't let to change PIN or read from device saved credentials, I can't remember. But if you install from website exe version then there is no issue.

Hello! As mentioned in the post, we recommend removing the EXE/MSI installed version but it is not mandatory. Once the MSIX is installed, you’ll no longer be able to open other versions of 1Password and will be prompted to uninstall old versions, if opened.

In regards to functionality restrictions, some minor functionality will not work with the Microsoft Store MSIX installed versions of 1Password. Currently, we have determined that 'drag and drop' and 'Type in Window' filling functionality will not be available with the Microsoft Store version. However, this functionality will continue to work for directly downloaded MSIX installed versions.

The MSIX version runs without any issues, but it doesn't seem to update. After restarting 1Password manually, it is still on the same 8.10.74 version.

edit: nvm, saw https://www.reddit.com/r/1Password/comments/1ka1vf8/comment/mpuveag/ in the reddit post.

That's great to hear. We've determined that 1Password is trying to download and install yesterday's Stable release, which is intended, but since the MSIX is locked strictly to the Beta channel, it's erroring out when trying to install the update.

There is a Beta release scheduled for today that you should have no issues updating to. Continue to try updating 1Password and any Beta releases should successfully update.

Same problem, but within the Beta-Channel - The update doesn't work ("Restart Now" does nothing and a manual restart does nothing either)

When I try to install (=update) the new MSIX manually I get the following error message:

App installation failed with error message: Windows cannot install package Agilebits.1Password_2025.610.2025.0_neutral_~_amwd9z03whsfe
      because a different package Agilebits.1Password_2025.523.1801.0_neutral_~_gh85et3mt782r
with the same name is already installed. Remove package Agilebits.1Password_2025.523.1801.0_neutral_~_gh85et3mt782r before installing. (0x80073cf3)

The `PackageFamilyName` changed between these two versions:
         - `8.10.80.18`: `Agilebits.1Password_gh85et3mt782r`
         - `8.10.82.27`: `Agilebits.1Password_amwd9z03whsfe`
