Family controls in 1P - restricting Shared and blocking Private

I have my family setup to use 1P. Spouse and I are both family organizers. We have two kids on it as well.

Neither of them are old enough in our view to have unrestricted access to things online. I need to be able to control two things in their use of 1P:

  1. No private vault.
  2. No access to the shared vault.

On the first one, it seems all users get a private vault whether we want that to happen or not. We have a contract with our kids that includes a few contingencies. Among them - they cannot have or use any devices (phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) without us having full visibility into their activities. That also means full visibility into what accounts they have, the passwords to those accounts, etc. I know I can see the contents of their private vaults when I go into the Private vault in my 1P, but for simplicity, I'd prefer to simply delete it and make them use only the vault I created for their use. How can I do this?

On the 2nd point, the shared vault includes a lot of things we don't want the kids to be able to see (or at least edit). How can we block their ability to view and/or edit the contents of the shared vault? I want it only accessible to family organizers.

    Hello dgtsf! 👋

    Thank you for the questions! Every family member gets access to the default Shared vault in a 1Password Families membership as well as their own Private vault that only they can access. 

    Regarding the Shared vault: you can create a new vault and move the items that you don't want your kids to have access to into that new vault. Then you can share the new vault with only the family members who should have access: Create and share vaults

    There isn't an easy answer regarding the Private vault that each family member gets. I have two suggestions: 

    1. You can use Travel Mode to hide the Private vault from their devices, however they would have the ability to turn Travel Mode off themselves if they wanted to: Use Travel Mode to remove vaults from your devices when you travel
    2. You could consider inviting your kids as "guests" rather than as "family members" to your 1Password Families membership. This would only give them access to a single shared vault and wouldn't give them their own Private vault: Share with guests in 1Password Families
