macOS Password app interferes with passkeys

I've been trying to log in to a few websites using Firefox and Safari with a passkey generated in 1Password8, but the Password app keeps interfering with 1Password, making it impossible to log in.

If I cancel this screen and then click on "Use passkey" on 1Password:

I'm redirected to this:

If I try to use my passkey, I get this screen:

There is no way to turn this off and use the passkey I had set up in 1Password. The Password app is forcing me to use my phone, not the TouchID I had on my computer. I'm now stuck in an endless cycle  of trying to log in but being unable to unless I use the Password app, which I don't want to.

If I use my phone to set up the passkey as indicated in the previous screen, I get this on my phone:

When I click Continue, it goes to 1Password, but I can't add a passkey, and the cycle begins again.

In 1Password, I get the following error under one-time password: "The one-time password URL is incorrect: the scheme is invalid. Check the URL and try again. If you still have trouble, contact support for the site you're trying to add."

Unlike in iOS, there's no way to set up 1Password as the default password manager. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks for the question! Passkeys are saved in 1Password just like your passwords and other important login credentials, make sure that the built-in Apple Passwords app is turned off on your end:

    1. Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar in the top right corner of your screen, then click System Settings
    2. Click General
    3. Click AutoFill & passwords.
    4. Turn off AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys

Then, after you've installed 1Password in your browser, use this guide to save your passkeys in 1Password: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser

  • Hello Dave,

    Thank you for replying!

Are passkeys now saved by the Password app instead? Do I understand this correctly?

      Hey luckycatmama!

You have the ability to save passkeys in the macOS Password.app.  Also, if you follow the steps provided by 1P_Dave, you have the ability to save passkeys in 1Password (which I personally think is far better).  In my experience, the key to getting this to work seamlessly is in properly adjusting macOS settings, browser settings, AND the 1Password extension settings - once things are configured correctly passkeys with 1Password are amazing!!

Thank you! I will try this, too. For some reason, turning off macOS Passwords is a bit more complicated in Sequoia than I thought.

  • Hello luckycatmama! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into issues when saving a passkey in 1Password. On the Mac, you'll need to install the 1Password browser extension in every browser to save and sign in with passkeys rather than choosing 1Password as your password manager in macOS (like you would in iOS). You can download 1Password in the browser here: Get 1Password in the browser

Once 1Password is installed and setup in your browser, use this guide to save your passkey: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser

If you already had 1Password in the browser installed, or if those steps don't work, then let me know and I can help further. 🙂
