Merging Duplicated Password
Is there a way to merge duplicate entries in 1Password?

Hello robertoborges! 👋
Thank you for the question! 1Password 8 includes a duplicate finder through Watchtower, try these steps:
- Open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app.
- Click on Watchtower in the sidebar.
- Click on Show Items under Items with duplicates.
The duplicates remover tool will only look for items that are exactly the same and that are located in the same vault. You can read more here: Use Watchtower to find account details you need to changeI hope that helps.

Hello All,
I'm struggling with duplicate issues as well. I made the mistake of importing from both my Windows laptop and iPhone, and it has become a complete mess. The duplicate feature is not helpful, and 1Password doesn't recognise slight URL variations. On top of that, the import process doesn't organise accounts and passwords by domain, accounts without passwords, or accounts without usernames, and even prompts for passwords within files. Now, the tool is a chaotic mess that I'm trying to sort out. Life without 1Password was so much simpler, and after subscribing to this tool, it's only made things harder as I attempt to fix the mess I accidentally created.

I'm sorry that you ran into issues after importing your items. Where were your passwords stored before you migrated them to 1Password and are they still saved there? It might be best to start over by deleting the items in 1Password and then just re-importing your passwords from one of your devices so that you avoid the duplicates.
Are you able to tell me how you imported your items? Was it using a CSV file or another option? You can find our import guide here: Move your data from other applications to 1Password

Hello Dave,
Thank you for your response.
I’ve exported and imported the data via .csv as suggested. Unfortunately, at no point during the process does the portal provide any warning about potential duplicate password issues. Given that many users operate across multiple platforms—Edge, Safari, Chrome, and Apple Passwords—it’s surprising that this challenge hasn’t been more proactively addressed. It’s a real-world scenario that I believe warrants a thoughtful solution.
From what I’ve gathered, this isn’t a newly identified issue. It’s been discussed for well over a year, and some users suggest it’s been around for more than three. It’s concerning that the development team hasn’t prioritized it, especially considering the reputation and expectations surrounding 1Password. The fact that this thread is still active after such a long time speaks volumes.
On machines where the web plugin is required, the login experience becomes noticeably more difficult. Overall, I had hoped for a more seamless and intelligent solution from 1Password. With all due respect, I’ve invested over a month working through this and have made significant progress—it would be disheartening to have to start over.

I have just come here as my husband and I have set up our account today, importing all passwords from Google and there are SO MANY duplicates. As others have mentioned, duplicates for minor URL differences, also duplicates for online vs. mobile applications. Some have official names, many others are just web addresses as the name of the account - it's an absolute mess. I really think you should look to add a 'Merge' option. It may only be used by people starting up initially, but would hugely improve your UX.
I have spent hours this evening trying to tidy it up and haven't even made a dent. Not to mention didn't realise the duplications across mobile and web so have already deleted one or the other in many cases. And I can confirm that if you delete one but leave the other, it does not work. You need to keep both the mobile and web browser as separate passwords, even though it is for the same account!
I'd really appreciate it if you could sort this out please to make our life easier.

Welcome to the community! It sounds like you had a lot of similar items for the same accounts stored in Google's password manager over the years and all of those were then imported into 1Password. I can see how a merge tool would help and I've passed your feedback along to the team internally.
For the time being, one thing that can help is the Imported tag that is added to imported items, it looks like this:
You can go through your imported items one by one, using the desktop app's search tool to find related items. If you do find related items then you can choose to keep one and then edit it to make sure that it has all of the information needed before deleting the other item. Then you can remove the Imported tag from the item to mark that you've already checked that one. Once you no longer see any more items with the Imported tag then you're done!
You need to keep both the mobile and web browser as separate passwords, even though it is for the same account!
That doesn't sound right, the same Login item should work in both a mobile app and a website in your browser. Can you tell me a little more about the issue? Does the item have a website address added to the item that you kept? What happens when you try to fill it, do you see an error message?

The “Duplicates Finder” feature does not effectively address the issue of multiple saved passwords for the same website. If there is even a slight variation in the base web address (e.g., a single letter difference), the system fails to recognize these as duplicates. As a result, multiple entries for the same site accumulate—especially when using mobile apps or different login URLs—making it unclear which password is the most current. This often leads to login failures, forcing the use of the “Forgot Password” option, which only creates more confusion if the older, duplicate entries are not manually deleted. This issue is frustrating because the core purpose of a password manager is to save time and simplify logins. Instead, I’m spending more time resetting passwords and cleaning up duplicates.

Thank you for sharing your use case. I'm curious about the following:
If there is even a slight variation in the base web address (e.g., a single letter difference), the system fails to recognize these as duplicates. As a result, multiple entries for the same site accumulate
I'd like to know more about how you end up with multiple items for the same website. As long as the domain portion of the website address is the same, 1Password will suggest a saved login for that website. So if you have https//domain.com/page3 saved in an item in 1Password, 1Password will still suggest that item on other pages with the same domain:
When you try to save a new password for the website in the browser, 1Password will remember that you already have login credentials for that website and ask if you want to update your existing item:
Are you using 1Password to automatically save your login credentials on websites and in apps? Or are you creating items manually in the 1Password app?

80–90% of my saved passwords in 1Password are duplicates for the same service. After exporting my vault into Excel and parsing the data, I ended up with ~5,000 duplicates across ~1,200 unique logins.
I cannot believe this isn’t obvious to 1Password internally. I’ve been using password managers for 10+ years and consider myself tech-native, yet I’m left having to choose between 3–10 different entries every time I log into an account. That defeats the entire point of using a password manager.
Honestly, I’d be better off with a Word doc tracking my passwords than dealing with this mess. I regret switching from LastPass, which at least didn’t bury me in duplicates.
If needed, I’m happy to share more details of this absurd duplicate problem via DM or phone call. But to reiterate: 90%+ of my 1,000+ logins have multiple duplicates. I can’t believe I’m the only one dealing with this. I have never made a post like this re. A bad experience with software. But this problem butts its ugly head literally every day. What the heck am I paying for?

I object to this question being marked as “Solved.” It’s widely known that the existing duplicate finder is deliberately extremely limited. While I commend the person who wrote that function a couple of years ago, I urge 1PW to complete or expand the project to make it more useful.

Marking a post as a solution to a thread doesn't mean that the issue/request/discussion itself is closed. It's a way to highlight the most up-to-date answer for anyone who stumbles onto the thread in the future.

Thanks for clarifying that. I suggest adopting terms similar to those Apple uses for its community forum, such as “1PW recommend answer” or “best answer.”
“Solved” is frustrating to see for an issue that’s still open.

Hello 1P_Dave,
Sorry but this is only a solution for a very specific case - a DUPLICATE finder. What we are looking for is a MERGE function, like in any good address-book app. Over time, "nearly duplicate" entries happen and there should be a way to merge them.

Thank you for the feedback. You wrote:

Can you tell me a little more about how these "nearly duplicate" items are created? For example, if you're saving login credentials for a website 1Password should prompt you to update an existing Login item for that website before you create a new one.

I agree with all of this. I want to import all my stuff from Google and Apple, but I think that would give me hundreds of duplicate entries

Thanks for reaching out, I can certainly file a feature request on your behalf. Just to clarify, were you saving passwords for the same websites into both Google and Apple at the same time?
-Dave
- earthsaverOccasional Contributor
I think that's pretty commonplace among users who use both Chrome on their Mac and Safari on their iPhone, for example, before adopting 1Password.

The feature request to merge entries has been asked for more than 3 YEARS!!! It is very disappointing that an obviously useful feature is not addressed.
- lolNew Contributor
Wow, I almost just posted the same feature request, and this is only a few days old! Good thing I searched first instead of creating my own post, as that would have been both redundant and a waste of everyone's time, including mine. Incredible.
Oh sorry, yes, I too want the "merge" feature as described. Search results on the forum show that many people do. đź‘€

Yesterday I had an existing Note with attached docs and a webpage with login info. I wanted to make them both into one item. I have also had mutilple login items for the same site especially as things such as login pages change.
