Safari extension broken for multiple years + generally more glitchy and worse experience over time

I'm currently using two profiles in Safari, and logging in, in the extension, just doesn't work, and it hasn't worked for years. One would think this is a foundational issue and should be very high on the priority list, but update after update and no fixes. Once in a blue moon you manage to login and maybe the auto fill will work, maybe. Other times you can login a thousand times and you still stay logged out.

I've been a customer for over a decade, but my renewal is coming up and I just can't motivate paying for another year of this not working.

On top of that, ever since the move to Electron it seems the app is getting worse and worse over time, I still miss the snappiness of 7 (Rust doesn't help when the interface is blocking). Since I have to use the global auto fill due to extension not working correctly it's a hit and miss, sometimes I finds the login, sometimes not, and it's slow, so very slow (comparatively).

This has been at least an issue on my last five Mac's, so it's not a "your machine thing". I know this might come off as whiny and not very solutions oriented, but I've seen the threads, it is a known issue and has been for a long time.

Clicking it just shows the  Touch ID prompt.

Once I've verified with Touch ID clicking it again does nothing.

Going into settings shows the green light.

Interesting enough, after going into settings the autofill works (the input field suggests the right login).

So I tried it again but instead of going into settings I just pressed the add-on in the toolbar (after touch id on the input field) and got this.

Just an empty popup, however clicking it again shows the correct view. So to me it seems like there's a disconnecting between authenticating and the addon updating its state and you have to engage the toolbar button for it to do so (even though it says it's locked in the screenshot it was unlocked).
But! When trying to reproduce the same steps it stays locked and going into settings doesn't help, so there's likely multiple issues here.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of the issue! So that I can investigate further, I'd like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser:

Send a diagnostics report (browser extension)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

1Password is SO broken on macOS for Safari that I literally can't use Safari for anything. I'm on macOS 15.7. It's been broken for ages. 1Password with Chrome-based browsers or Fireox on macOS is 99% ok. I even opened up a case with 1P a year ago, and the issue was never resolved.

Most of the time clicking on the 1P icon in the Safari toolbar menu does NOT unlock 1P. It either spins and never asks for credentials, or I enter them, but 1P stays locked. On the rare occasion 1P DOES unlock, autofill in browser web forms is terribly broken. 1P for Safari, for me, is 100% unusable.

I'm sorry that you're also running into issues with 1Password in Safari. So that I can better understand the situation in your case, can you tell me the following:

      1. When the issue occurs, if you right-click on the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar and then click Settings, do you see a green connected status for app integration? Or a different colour and an error message?
      2. Do you have the desktop app installed with the menu bar icon turned on so that the desktop app can run in the background even when the main window is closed?

  • Hello tozz! đź‘‹

I'm sorry that you're running into issues with 1Password in Safari. The behavior that you're seeing definitely doesn't sound right and I'd like to learn more about the situation to identify whether you're running into an already known issue or one that needs more investigation.

As a start, macOS 15.6 contained fixes for Safari that resolved issues that prevented 1Password from unlocking or filling until the browser was restarted. Can you let me know if you're running macOS 15.6 or later: Find out which macOS your Mac is using

Do you mean that you're having trouble filling your login credentials into another website? Or that you enter your account password to unlock 1Password in Safari but 1Password doesn't unlock?

Since I have to use the global auto fill due to extension not working correctly it's a hit and miss, sometimes I finds the login, sometimes not, and it's slow, so very slow (comparatively).

Just to clarify: are you pressing Command-Backslash (Universal Autofill) to fill your login when you see this slowness? How long does it take for your login credentials to fill into the page after you press Command-Backslash? Let me know if I misunderstood.

This has been the case for the last few macOS versions, I'm running 15.6.1 on all my Macs currently.

Do you mean that you're having trouble filling your login credentials into another website? Or that you enter your account password to unlock 1Password in Safari but 1Password doesn't unlock?

I fill in my 1Password password, it seems like it's succeeding but it stays locked. Clicking the 1Password icon just prompts for the password again, so the second option, can't unlock.

Just to clarify: are you pressing Command-Backslash (Universal Autofill) to fill your login when you see this slowness? How long does it take for your login credentials to fill into the page after you press Command-Backslash? Let me know if I misunderstood.

Yes, it's the universal autofill. Usually a couple of seconds without any interaction, you have to wait and see if it's successful or not. Then of course the other problem with universal autofill is that it doesn't always recognize the site so you have to manually search for it, I've verified the URL's etc and it's intermittent, some days a site works, others it doesn't.
This behavior is also the same on all my Macs unfortunately.

Thank you for the reply. I'd like to investigate both of these issues further, starting with the Safari issue:

I fill in my 1Password password, it seems like it's succeeding but it stays locked. Clicking the 1Password icon just prompts for the password again, so the second option, can't unlock.

When the issue occurs, if you right-click on the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar and then click Settings, do you see a green connected status for app integration? Or a different colour and an error message?

Are you able to post a screenshot of the prompt that you see when 1Password asks for your password? This will tell me more about the situation.
