Existing Personal 1Password Accounts Using Corporate Email Addresses

Hello,

We are evaluating 1Password Business for a large enterprise deployment and have a question regarding employees who may already be using personal 1Password accounts with their corporate email addresses.

For example:

  • An employee independently signs up for a personal 1Password account using their corporate email address (user@company.com)
  • The company later deploys 1Password Business with SSO and SCIM provisioning

Our primary concern is understanding what happens to the employee's personal account in this situation.

Specifically:

  1. Can the employee keep their personal account?
  2. Can the employee change the email address on the personal account (for example, from user@company.com to a personal Gmail address) and continue using it independently?
  3. What happens when the same corporate email address is invited to a Business account?
  4. What happens if SCIM provisioning creates the same user?
  5. Does SSO enforcement affect the existing personal account?
  6. Are any personal vaults, items, or data automatically transferred into the Business account?
  7. Can Business administrators view or access any data from the employee's personal account?

We are particularly interested in real-world experiences from organizations that have encountered employees using personal 1Password accounts with company-owned email addresses before a Business deployment.

Thank you for your guidance.

Do not trust any of the following answers, as I am unqualified to answer despite my certification. You might trust answers from 1Password Business Support. and share them with us.

    1. Yes, presuming that they are still employed after misusing a company email address.
    2. Yes.
    3. The invitation email arrives in the inbox.
    4. I would expect that the second process to try to create a 1Password account (which I presume you mean by "user") using the same email address would fail.
    5. If it is actually a personal account, then no, else yes.
    6. No, where "the Business account" is one of the account owners and "transferred into" implies being moved.
    7. No, unless they misuse the account recovery process and other administrative access to gain access to the 1Password account.
Yes, if the employee provides access to their vault(s).

Much of the interpretation of the questions depends on when a 1Password account is called "personal" of "business". Completion of the process of adding a team member effectively transforms the 1Password account into a "business" account.

Since someone is going to state the obvious, it might as well be me. The first part of rolling out 1Password business is the employee indoctrination process, during which employees will learn How to use multiple accounts including the business account which will be associated with their company email and their personal account which will be associated with a personal email address and which can now become a member of a free-while-employed Families plan.

    My question:

    1. Does the Private vault become the Employee vault in the process of and existing 1Password account joining a team?
It's not explicitly addressed in Migrate your existing 1Password data to a team or business account or Create and share vaults.

      Thank you for your reply.

The question regarding whether an existing Private vault becomes the
Employee vault during the process of joining a Business account is
particularly interesting and closely related to our customer's concern.

Our customer is specifically trying to understand what happens when an
employee has already been using 1Password with a corporate email
address before the organization deploys 1Password Business.

We are also waiting for an official response from 1Password Support,
but I agree that clarification on the Private Vault vs Employee Vault
      behavior would be very valuable.

Thank you for raising that point.
