Disable Private or default to a Shared

Thanks for reaching out! I have a suggestion that might help, have you looked into using Travel Mode? With Travel Mode, you can set certain vaults as "safe for travel" and then hide all of the other vaults from the 1Password app. You can read more here: 

• Use Travel Mode to remove vaults from your devices when you travel

So in your case, you would have each family member (who doesn't want to see the Private vault) only mark the Shared vault as "safe for travel" and then turn on Travel Mode. They'll see the Private vault disappear from the 1Password app on all of their devices.
