Regression: App: No keyboard shortcut to search all vaults

Before, pressing Ctrl/Cmd+F from anywhere in the app would focus the main search bar with no text, letting the user search the entire current Collection.

Now, pressing Ctrl/Cmd+F when inside a vault clears the current search and automatically prepends a filter for the current vault, limiting search to the current vault.

This is your app so you're free to change behavior. However, you regressed the ability to use a keyboard shortcut to initiate a Collection-wide search from anywhere in the app.

The reason you regressed it was to let the user search the current vault. If only there were already a shortcut for that? Oh there already is a shortcut to search the current vault: Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+F. That's crazy! Why did you do this then?

If you're wondering why the harsh tone, it's because I spent dozens of hours working with you guys to debug your Face ID integration when that first became a thing along with a host of other bugs, in the past. However, in the past 4 years or so, any bug I've ever opened on you seems to get closed "as intended", ignoring your own record of truth (changelog) showing that your regressions are often unannounced, unexpected, and even contrary to your changelog. As an industry colleague, this sort of apathetic and arguably negligent behavior is completely pathetic for a security company.

  • Hello waderlamprey! 👋

Thank you for reaching out! Selecting a vault and then pressing Command-F will add a search filter for that vault in the search field. I've just checked an older version of 1Password 8 from a year and a half ago and it was the same behaviour there.

Our support page for search has also documented the same behaviour since the support page was updated for 1Password 8 in 2022:

Select a tag, category, or vault and press Command-F. The matching search filters will be added to the search field.

Do you happen to remember the last time that you selected a vault, pressed Command-F, and didn't see a search filter for that vault added to the search field? Is it possible that you were using an older version of 1Password and not 1Password 8?

That being said, you can clear a search filter from the search field by pressing esc on your keyboard so that the search scope then includes the entire account or collection. Let me know if that doesn't fit your workflow.
