Request: Turn off username guessing in the apps [RESOLVED]
When I go to create a new login, the user name is prefilled with an email address I haven’t used in years. This shouldn’t have any email address, especially when I use Fastmail’s masked emails. I hope this is a bug and not a normal thing.

Hello everyone,
I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:
You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date
Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

Hello, Dave. This feature doesn't seem to be working for me. I have it unchecked, but still get prompts/popovers that suggest unrelated email addresses at logins. I don't want unrelated email suggestions because this leads to mistakes.
For instance, I don't use my 1password account email to login anywhere anymore, but it's suggested with every login. How can I make this stop?
I'm using 1Password for Mac 8.11.14 and Brave Browser Brave 1.83.118 (Official Build)

1P_Dave , is the TestFlight or 1Password for IOS rush chairman really particular this year? Just need to know where to send my referral letter so I can hopefully get a bid.

Apple imposes a limit on the number of users that can be added to a TestFlight beta. However, users are dropped from the TestFlight if they're inactive for a certain amount of time which frees up spots for new folks to join the TestFlight. 🙂

5 months on and still in beta? Are there not feature releases for 1PW or do they only do periodic releases to smooth the QA process and aggregate changes?
I have multiple e-mails for different needs .finance , .shopping etc so I can drop them if they get sold or turned into a spam dump. The auto suggestion is not helpful for me. - 1P_Dave

Thanks for the ping! The feature being discussed in this thread exists in the 1Password apps, not the browser extensions.
How do I set up browser extension beta release for iOS?
On iOS, 1Password for Safari is bundled with the 1Password for iOS app. You can download the beta version of 1Password for iOS using TestFlight: Install a beta release of the 1Password app
Once the app is installed, use this guide to setup 1Password for Safari: Set up 1Password for Safari
Note: If TestFlight says that the 1Password for iOS beta is currently full then you'll need to try to install the beta again later. Spaces do free up from time to time.

although it would be better still if it also didn't still suggest a password.
Same. Had it always done this? I don't remember although I noticed it today too!!

I've just installed the beta purely to be able to turn this annoying "feature" off!
Much better... although it would be better still if it also didn't still suggest a password.

Hello folks,
Thank you to everyone for the continued feedback regarding 1Password automatically filling your email address in the username field for faster item creation. In the most recent beta version, I'm happy to share that we're testing a new setting to allow users to turn off automatic username filling if they wish:
UPDATE May 15th, 2025: The feature is now available in the beta version (8.10.78) of 1Password. Once testing is complete in the beta, the team hopes to release the feature to the stable version as well: Use 1Password beta releases-Dave

Thanks, Dave. I'll be very happy when this hits Production!
As mentioned by so many others, this "feature" is annoying and actually slows things down...

I see this in beta now. Thank you. Now for the fun part: moving people back to 1Password. The fact that you listened to users makes me happy to help my friends and family do this.

Thank you, I've updated my post above to let folks know that the feature is indeed available in the latest beta version (8.10.78).

This is great, thankyou. Will this setting work it's way into the mobile apps (and browser extensions) too at some point or is this an account wide flag i.e. once set somewhere it applies everywhere/across all apps?
Cheers

Thanks for the question! The setting will be available for the mobile apps as well, you'll have the choice to enable or disable the feature on each device where you're using 1Password.

Hello folks,
I wanted to provide an update here where everyone can see it. As discussed, 1Password will automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password so that you can create new items faster. Username suggestions are based on the vault that you’re creating a new item in and are suggested based on previous use.
In the last month (March 2025) the team has made an improvement to the feature, you can now configure a default identity and always have the email address of that default identity be suggested when creating a new item: Choose your default identity and credit card items
The team will continue to iterate further based on everyone's feedback and are looking into adding a setting to turn off username suggestions in the future. We'll continue to keep the community updated on new developments. Thanks again for all of the feedback!

1P_Dave, any info about when this "feature" can be disabled in the options?
It's annoyed me since it was introduced, but I can't stand it any more.
Comically, this very forum uses an actual username rather than an email address to login, as do many other sites and systems.
This slows down creating new logins, it's a dumb "feature" that should never have been implemented without a way to disable it.Can you provide a link to download the version prior to this "feature" being added?
Like others in this thread, I'll be looking for a new password manager at my next renewal if it can't be turned off.- 1P_Dave

The team is looking into adding a setting to turn off username suggestions in the future but I don't have an ETA to share. I've passed along your feedback to the team internally.

Choosing a default identity in no way solves this issue, because the whole point is that we don't want a default username at all. Instead of enabling faster creation of new items, this just slows it down and creates an opportunity for incorrect information to be saved.
- primeDedicated Contributor
I couldn’t agree with you more. We don’t want a default email address in a profile, we just want an off switch. An off switch should have been done 1st then other improvements. All this is doing is making a lot of users mad, and I feel like 1Password doesn’t see this as an issue at all. 4 months and counting.

I think it's about time the "solution" post was unmarked for this discussion.
This remains incredibly frustrating.

Afraid not.
Professionally, I have ~10,000 items in my primarily accessible vaults, spanning 3 live and ~15 acquired businesses. I have 6 different email addresses which I have to use daily. Personally, every website uses a different email address/username.
There is no such thing as a default identity for power users.
