"1Password is trying to set up Touch ID for your account"

When opening the app, I always get a dialog with this message: "1Password is trying to set up Touch ID for your account. Touch ID to allow this."

Nothing happens when I then Touch ID — I have to cancel the dialog every time. Touch ID is already on in the 1Password prefs.

How to sort this issue out?

Thank you for the reply. I can confirm that you're running into a known issue and I've added your report to the work item open for the issue. Hopefully this can be fixed in a future update to 1Password soon.

For the time being, the prompt will only appear if Touch ID is already enabled so unlocking 1Password using Touch ID would be the most convenient workflow. However I'm aware that sometimes you're required to enter your account password.

We have some employees experiencing these same symptoms after their 1Password authentication was converted from master password to Google SSO. They see random prompts to Sign in with Google that displays an error, "Unable to sign in: something went wrong when signing you in. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact support." Followed by Touch ID prompts with the message, "1Password is trying to Set up Touch ID for your account. Touch ID to allow this."

Can you share an update on progress for this fix? Can you add me to the internal case tracking, too?

I'm sorry that your team is running into sign in issues. You wrote:

That definitely isn't right and it's a separate issue from the "Set up Touch ID" prompt. So that we can help further, I'd like to ask you to create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from an affected users Mac right after they run into this error message:

      Send a diagnostics report (Mac)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

      With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number.  Please post that number here.  Thanks very much!

I'm sorry for the frustration. The issue does also affect folks who are using their Apple Watch to unlock 1Password. I've added your report to the internal work item as well.

  • I see the same issue even though I have Unlock with Touch ID turned off. I do have Unlock with Apple Watch enabled though.

It's a frustrating bug because the alert isn't keyboard-dismissible, ruining an otherwise keyboard-only workflow.

(Seeing this in the 8.10.58, build 81058041)

    Hi Dave

Thanks for following up with me.

I don't see that message when I unlock via TouchID but I do see it when I unlock via account password.

I don't have my Apple Watch on right now so can't test whether I also see the message if I unlock with the Watch.

  • Hello infoarts! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing an unexpected message when opening 1Password. Are you seeing this message when you unlock 1Password using your account password?

And do you see the same message when you unlock 1Password using Touch ID (not by entering your account password)?

I've been seeing this problem for a few months and few 1P versions now.

Yes, I see the message when I type my account password when I unlock.
This occurs on a Mac mini where there is no Touch ID.

And on a MacBook Pro used as a desktop, where it more convenient to type the password than reach for the finger reader.
And after typing my password, getting the message and touching the print reader, nothing gets set and saved for the next time.

      Please squash this bug.

I need to slightly correct my message above.

On the Mac Mini, the message says to approve the change on my Apple Watch.  Sometimes it talks to my watch, sometimes it doesn't.  When it does, and I do approve on my Watch, nothing gets set or saved for the next instance.

On my MacBook Pro, the message asks me to approve with TouchID.  And again, when I do touch to approve, nothing gets set or saved for the next instance.
