iOS Safari extension cannot connect to app
Recently the Safari extension on my iPhone stopped working. I am unable to sign in with my master password or Face ID, which both work just fine in the 1Password app. I also get an error message saying it cannot connect to the app. I've tried all of the troubleshooting steps I could find, including:
- Clearing the browser cache
- Force quitting both apps and signing into the 1Password app before trying the extension
- Uninstalling and reinstalling 1Password
- Restarting my iPhone
- Toggling various 1Password security settings
- Disabling and re-enabling the extension
I am on the latest version of the 1Password app and iOS 26.4 Public Beta. Any ideas how I can get this to work again? Is it an issue with the iOS beta version?
Thanks!
Hello folks,
We've fixed an issue where some users were unable to unlock the 1Password Safari extension on iOS while Two-Factor authentication is enabled. Please update to 1Password for iOS version 8.12.7: How to keep 1Password up to date
After updating, if you're still unable to unlock 1Password for Safari then fully close Safari, re-open it, and unlock 1Password for Safari again. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this issue caused, and we appreciate your patience while we worked on releasing a fix.

Looks like they finally pushed the official fix for this! Took way too long but I’m glad it’s resolved.

This issue with the 1Password Safari extension has been ongoing for about a month and is still not fixed. Even when I enter the correct password, it refuses to unlock.
I honestly do not understand why this bug has been left unresolved for so long. If someone from the 1Password team is monitoring this forum, please respond.
I updated to 1Password 8.12.8-23 on March 11, 2026, and the problem still remains. The Safari extension still cannot be unlocked.
using iOS 26.4 beta 3.Related threads for reference:

Same issue here. The extension has been very janky for a while now. I'm not sure if Apple is making it harder to build extensions like 1Password, or whether AgileBits has lost the plot.

Same issue for me, I've only just updated to 1password 8 for IOS as v7 was no longer working correctly, now I'm getting the "Could not connect to the 1Password App. Try unlocking again" error message for the Safari Plugin. Running IOS 26.3.1 . Otherwise the app itself works fine.

and now i got it working with two factor authentication. What i did i unlinked all inactive and active safari extension links from web management. Then i re-enabled two factor authentication from website -> on iphone settings i de-selected autofill with 1password and enabled it back After that i tried to login website from safari and it worked. First it transferred me to 1password website where i have to enter my credentials and two factor code.
Give me some bonus :D- WorldIRCDedicated Contributor
Looks like it broke again. Unfortunately this didn’t work as a permanent fix

Thanks for sharing your findings. We really appreciate you taking the time to test this and post your results for the community. The steps you outlined can work as an alternative workaround for the issue. That said, we generally try not to recommend disabling two-factor authentication as a workaround for issues. For the time being, if folks are more comfortable with it, another option is to save and fill logins in Safari using Password AutoFill until the issue with 1Password for Safari is fully resolved: Use 1Password to save logins and sign in to apps and websites on your iPhone and iPad
Our development team is actively coding a fix for the issue and I hope to have more news to share soon.

Thank you.
bzt nevertheless less it’s a next update next huge bug release.
software quality seems to go down I think.hope they will fix it soon!
I think that most of the users I know are not able (and don’t like to) to go through all those steps.
This is also a thing where they do loose trust into the product.

i got my IOS safari extension back to working by disabling Two Factor Authentication from the web account management.

I’m not sure I’m looking to reduce overall security on the platform to fix this. Interesting that you were able to find this causation though. Hopefully helps the team in developing their fix.

yeah, i also dont want to compromise on security.
I just had to test that step because i was trying to figure out what changed on my side when extension stopped working, and i realized the problem started right after i enabled two factor authentication :)

Why was this marked as "Solved?" It's not solved.

It is unfortunate today’s 1PW update didn’t resolve the issue. The iOS Safari extension is the only reason I use 1Password.

Marking a post as a solution to a thread doesn't mean that the issue/request itself is fixed or closed. It's a way to highlight the most up-to-date answer for anyone who stumbles onto the thread in the future so that they don't have to read the entire thread.

I think it should be better to rename it completely- or isn’t it possible?

How is this not fixed yet? 1Password on iOS and iPadOS is almost unusable until this bug is resolved. I swear, 1Password finds a way to break the iOS/iPadOS Safari extension at least once or twice a year. I don't know why I keep paying for this subscription.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, our development team is currently tracking the issue. See this post for a workaround until a fix is available.

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry that you're unable to unlock 1Password for Safari on iPhone or iPad and may be seeing the following message: Could not connect to the 1Password App. Try unlocking again.
We've been able to reproduce the issue on our end as well and our development team is currently investigating. At the moment, since the issue doesn't affect the unlocking of the 1Password for iOS app itself, the best workaround is to use Password AutoFill to fill and save logins in Safari, you can find a guide here: Use 1Password to save logins and sign in to apps and websites on your iPhone and iPad
I'll update this thread as soon as a fix is available for 1Password for Safari on iOS. I'm sorry again for the disruption.
